As I completed each assignment I would email it to my tutor and he would promptly mark it and send it back with comments and advice. Assistance from the assigned tutors are also very efficient and prompt. I found OOL to be very helpful and is quite ideal for people who work full-time and can't sit in reqular classes. Very supportive and encouraging tutor. © 2020 Trustpilot A/S. An A4 binder of course material and assignments was sent to me, my tutor emailed to introduce himself to me and I was ready to start work! He always responded very quickly and was always encouraging and helpful. Overall an informative and enjoyable 2 year study period. Helpful, informative, quick to reply and always fun. At first things went well … What is worse is that they lacked transparency in every way. You need to be self-motivated but if you stick at it, you can get good results. An A4 binder of course material and assignments was sent to me, my tutor emailed to introduce himself to me and I was ready to start work! She was always there, quick in replying, engaged and was very pleasant & helpful. I didn't ever receive one marked assignment (with OOL claiming not to have received it from the tutor). The OOL never shared my predicted grade with me. Pleased with the answer papers which I received after each module. Oxford Distance Learning College Reviews Click here if this is your business. Read more on Netmums You really need these as the folders often refer to diagrams in them. Supporting material was very good for both subjects. The hard work paid off. I do recommend OOL to a certain degree, however more support could have been in place, with more resources (such as past papers and diagrams) and revision guides, especially for those studying an A level; and it is very likely if you were to study an A level you will need to pay for a tutor alongside what you have been provided by the OOL - so overall it is a HUGE amount of money. I gained 2 A*s in my I GCSEs due to the excellent support and help provided throughout the course. Excellent and really helpful tutors. The Oxford Open Learning are a total shambles and a disgrace. Best wishes, Carolyn, Brilliant result Nicola, really well done. They failed to be transparent about their processes and predicted grades and failed to award a fair grade. (I failed Geography GSCE 50 years ago, due to the incompetence of my school. This was due to the unhelpful tutors who I only ever found replying to my questions with something even more confusing and also the many mistakes I found in the materials they provided. I found the course file very helpful in conjunction with the Edexel text book and Twig online. Basically you choose your own topic which must be linked to a French theme or context (cultural, social, person, country, etc). From the book choice, I chose Joseph Joffo's "A Bag of Marbles"/ "Un sac de billes" (an autobiography written through his child's own eyes some 30 years after his escape from Paris (Occupied France) with his brother, Maurice, over the demarcation line to the Free Zone in the South of France. As my film study, I chose "Goodbye Children"/Au revoir les enfants," by Louis Malle (based on a true story in a private catholic boarding school just outside of Paris where 3 Jewish boys were hidden in 1943/4).Again, you choose according to your own interests: either 2 books or 1 book and a film to study from the range of books & films as specified on the OOL's list (the range is wide). My course tutor Ms Silvana Avram was absolutely brilliant and I can't thank her enough for her written feedback (essays) & her guidance by phone. Also, the materials they provide are poor and so out of date and make learning difficult. I chose to study A level Biology with OOL and received my study pack very quickly which gave me plenty of time to work through all the content. I haven't had the same issues with English as I have with Maths however, the overall service from OOL has been poor. Best wishes, Carolyn. In fact, I have been trying to escalate my matters since the 20th August and so far no one has been able to adequately respond and deal with my complaints, nor even acknowledge them. I enjoyed the course! I learned not just about the language but about French people - their culture, attitudes, opinions, heritage and creativity. Overpriced for what it is and you can do so much better by just hiring a proper tutor and buying the textbooks associated with the course you are studying for.I must add though it has been a while since I was a student with OOL as I have now finished my college education. But don’t worry, each and every one of them, be they a teacher or a student adviser, has the same access to our servers, tools and telephone systems that they would have if they were in the office. As I have a passion for Maths, it will be easier for me to undertake my A Level in Maths distance learning as, as well as being able to work alone, I also make use of all the tutorials available on websites, to enhance my knowledge of Mathematics. 105 Reviews. The course materials were also straightforward and well written - if challenging at times. I managed to revise in preparation for the GCSE's with ease and flexibility with their relevant and extensive study materials. They support their students to the fullest by keeping in constant communication with them (through emails, post or by phone); whenever I had a problem, I emailed them and they resolved it in prompt timing. I never thought I could ‘do’ French. I definitely don't think I got my money's worth from OOL, and I believe they are probably more useful with GCSEs than they are A levels. At the age of 71 I passed with an A grade. Had excellent support from my Biology tutor - couldn't have been better, but Maths tutor was totally unhelpful, and had to help myself, basically! I am delighted with help and support I received from Oxford Open Learning during my A level French course. My tutor was outstanding. I discovered l still had the ability to construct an essay that didn't waffle! My tutor was a very nice, helpful lady, but always seemed to be very busy with family life and other jobs, so she wasn't just a call away when I got really stuck, and I normally had to wait a good few days before getting a reply (in some situations she was much faster but overall I felt like I was bothering her if I called too much as I know she had a very busy schedule). I hadn't studied French since being at school 30 years before when I started a French A level with OOL in September 2018. My tutor was not involved in the process of being assigned a calculated grade. Absolutely disgraceful! Well done! I really wish I took out English Literature instead and as for the tutor - I haven’t really herd from her in months! My tutor was friendly, helpful and had great subject knowledge. As I … The staff at OOL were always very helpful and friendly and my tutor was amazing. I wanted to make sure I had planned enough time to study. The A level French course content with the Oxford Open Learning was excellent (many contemporary current affairs/issues in France, as well as covering the history of Pétain's Vichy Govt during WW2, the numerous round ups & deportations & the French Resistance !). It is hard work and there's no short cut, you have to put the graft in. The course is excellent and has hugely broadened my understanding of the literary world and the writing process. Oxford open learning was by far the simplest to organise and price was competitive. Am looking at courses and liked the sound of Child Coaching course at Oxford College (distance learning). 15 Benefits. In the end I decided to pay for a tutor outside of OOL to enable me to get the grade I was capable of achieving.Since choosing to get a new tutor I have not heard from OOL, not even to ask if I gained the grade I needed and whether I approved of their service or if any improvements to the course were needed. By no means is this relevant for all subjects however. I achieved 4 A* and an A in my exams, however; I would advice any prospective students to ensure they manage their study time thoroughly to ensure they complete all the work, especially if you are studying for a number … They are trying to exploit students using Covid-19 as an excuse to charge students even more fees. This for me was incredibly enjoyable and lifted me up even when the grammar intricacies and multiple verb tenses were getting me down! Developed to Level 3 standards... Find Out More They sabotaged my every effort to get a fair calculated grade. But you need to work hard to succeed. Painfully out of date materials, and set up procedures. When I initially enquired about the course I found the tutor a bit rude & abrupt but I thought I don’t want anyone stopping me from doing this. A great prof!I can only but highly recommend this French A level course with the OOL! They received a final and very important assignment from the tutor two weeks before exams but despite my pleas for a quick despatch to me (and my supplying a stamped addressed first-class stamp) there was still no timely despatch of the assignment to me. 88 Salaries. I loved that I could work at my own pace and my tutor was always on hand to help if i had any questions. Original review: March 27, 2018. The study pack was very useful and had all the teachers notes and some helpful resources which followed the book, however all the tutor marked and test yourself questions at the end of topics were nothing like exam questions you would get in an exam paper, and the resources failed to help once the topics became more complicated. Good range of courses, although my only criticism would be the fact that OOL does not offer a German course. This worked at first but tailed off as we got nearer to the exam. Oxford is home to two universities and over 40,000 students, making it the perfect setting for your own learning. I felt disappointed as the course was expensive and feedback is an essential part of improving service. I am currently studying Maths GCSE and English IGSCE with OOL and my experience is VERY different to all the listed reviewers on this site. We look forward to guiding you through Spanish and achieving similar results, thank you again. I never heard anything from anyone at Oxford Open Learning again until they requested this review 9 months later. This is lie number 3! I left high school due to my declining mental health and after much begging my mother agreed to let me do a distance learning course with Oxford Open Learning. The course material was sen tout quickly and my tutor is always quick to respond with helpful and insightful advice and comments. The fact that this meant they could claim further fees from me, is the reason they gave me a Grade 3, they charged me higher fees than the original exam centre and wanted even more money to extend my study time when the exam board makes clear the student should not be charged for this extension of time. The service they have provided is absolutely appalling. The only other expense is for sitting the exams, so this is a much cheaper way to study the subject and get your qualification than going to an evening course (if you can find one). 1 Photos. I would rate my experience as poor!!!!! I decided to take a Psychology GCSE to support my son who had taken psychology as a GCSE option but was a little unsure about whether he had made the right choice. She would also direct us to other specific on line resources for areas that he needed to explore futher.
